KAMLOOPS – The Open Door Group’s Gardengate Program celebrated its 25th anniversary on Thursday (Oct. 30). The organization has helped over one thousand people through their mental health journey through gardening, connection and meaningful work.

“This program wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for people. Being able to be a part of that person’s journey is for me really monumental,” Robert Wright, Gardengate’s program coordinator.

Throughout its 25 years, Gardengate has given people on their mental health journey a purpose.

“I love to talk and I love to share my thoughts and experiences. What better way of sharing your experiences than digging in the earth and being caretakers. I love to serve people, and this is a great place to do that,” said Caleb Winters, who’s been a member of Gardengate for over a year and a half.

Every year, the program provides 18,000 pounds of herbs, vegetables and fruit to the community.

“I think it’s amazing how they grow a great vegetable garden. It’s very kind what they’re doing in the community, and they allow people to come here and get vegetables,” said Jennifer Jean Hunt, a Gardengate member of three years.

Members hope more people will join the program in the coming years.

“I know this is a place for people with mental health challenges, but my wish is that the community can just come any time they like,” said Winters.

Organizers hope this program will grow beyond Kamloops and into other areas.

“Focusing on mental wellness and focusing on food security, those are going to be ever-present things that, as a community, we need to focus on,” adds Wright, “I would love to see Gardengates in other communities.”
