Halloween fireworks a no-go in Kamloops city limits this year

KAMLOOPS — Don’t waste your money on fireworks this year if you live in the City of Kamloops as Kamloops Fire Rescue says no fireworks permits are being issued.

The decision was made to deter people from setting off fireworks in neighbourhoods, and potentially injuring themselves or accidentally starting a fire.

“So this year along with every other year at the discretion of the fire chief, there’s no fireworks allowed in the city, anywhere in city limits,” says KFR Life Safety Educator Josh Cowen.

While temperatures are cooler this time of year, Cowen says the Kamloops area is coming off repeated dry summer seasons, meaning the risk of sparks getting out of hand is still too high.

“You discharge those fireworks, they go into someone’s cedar trees or junipers, and they catch a house on fire,” Cowen said. “Luckily for the City of Kamloops we have not lost a home but just down the street in Vernon, they lost a home a couple of years ago to fireworks.”

That said, Kamloops firefighters were called to extinguish a landscape fire on Grasslands Boulevard that was caused by unauthorized fireworks on Canada Day this year.

Fire Chief Ken Uzeloc also previously told CFJC that an updated Fire Prevention Bylaw that aimed to eliminate the consumer sale and use of fireworks within municipal limits is expected to go before Kamloops city council for its input at some point.

While the personal use of fireworks is already not permitted in Kamloops, the current Fire Prevention Bylaw allows for the sale and use of fireworks in the weeks leading up to Halloween and New Year’s Day, as long as Kamloops Fire Rescue grants that permission.

Cowen said if someone chooses to ignore the ban on setting off fireworks, they could be hit with a $250 fine if they’re caught.
