City committee told Tranquille, Notre Dame are most crime-riddled corridors in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — There are two areas in the city that generate the majority of community service and police responses.

At a meeting of the Kamloops council’s Safety and Security Select Committee Tuesday (Oct. 28), statistics provided show the 100- to 500-blocks of Tranquille Road, as well as the eastern portion of Notre Dame Drive, have seen a spike in calls to the RCMP.

The RCMP and the City of Kamloops have been working with the North Shore Business Improvement Association (NSBIA) to get businesses to report crimes, but NSBIA Executive Director Jeremy Heighton believes the statistics are still underreported.

“The increase in call volume is related to, I think, an increase in awareness, an increase in patrols by CSOs and RCMP, and an increase in us, as a BIA, and some of our members calling — but not all of our members,” said Heighton.

Heighton says the North Shore needs more support from the province for those struggling with mental health and addiction issues.

“We’ve been asking the city for this for three years,” he added. “We’ve been yelling at the province for it for years and we still are only just scratching the surface of what needs to occur when we put new housing or new servicing in any of our corridors, anywhere in the city.”
