Salmon Arm RCMP noting uptick in vehicle thefts due to unlocked doors and keys being left inside

SALMON ARM, B.C. — RCMP in Salmon Arm are asking residents to get into the habit of locking their vehicles and securing their valuables by 9:00 p.m.

RCMP say they have seen an increase in stolen vehicles and thefts from vehicles in Salmon Arm, and nearly all of them are the result of unlocked doors and fobs and keys being left in vehicles overnight.

In a separate news release issued Monday (Oct. 27), Salmon Arm RCMP noted three related incidents taking place on the morning of Oct. 10.

RCMP say a woman reported her vehicle was stolen out of her garage on 15th Avenue NE at 6:35 a.m. as her husband for work about 10 minutes earlier and left the garage door open. Police say there was a fob left in the vehicle. It was eventually recovered in Salmon Arm on Oct. 15.

At around 9:00 a.m. on Third Avenue SE, police a man reported his 2022 pickup truck was stolen out of his driveway sometime overnight, last seeing it at around 11:00 p.m. the night prior. According to RCMP, the man noted the truck was unlocked and there was a fob left inside. He called police at 11:35 a.m. to tell them he had found his truck a few blocks away.

Finally, at around 9:15 a.m. on 23rd Street SE, police say a man reported someone entered his unlocked 2025 pickup truck and stole cash, gift cards, a passport, sunglasses and a utility knife overnight. There was no video surveillance available.

Residents are asked to close and lock all doors and windows on their cars and homes, remove valuables from their vehicles, secure any bicycles, tools and outdoor equipment and turn on outdoor lights.
