Blazers can’t hang on to lead, fall to Giants 5-3

LANGLEY, B.C. — The Kamloops Blazers let one get away on Sunday (Oct. 26) night in Langley.

In their third game in as many nights, the Blazers fell 5-4 to the Vancouver Giants at the Langley Events Centre. It comes one night after the Blazers lost to the Giants 5-4 in overtime at home.

Josh Evaschesen ensured the Blazers started Sunday’s game well. The former British Columbia Hockey League player put himself into a tie for third in team scoring as he fired home a wrist shot from the slot halfway through the first period.

The Blazers then broke even on a power play early in the second. After surrendering a shorthanded goal to Jakob Oreskovic at 2:01, Isa Guram scored on a snapshot from the left circle just 35 seconds later to make it 2-1 Blazers.

Newly acquired defenceman Kayd Ruedig then scored his second goal with the Blazers in bizarre fashion. He threw the puck out in front and saw it deflect off two Giants skaters and in to make it 3-1.

However, just like it was on Saturday night, the Blazers weren’t able to hold on the two-goal lead. Blake Chorney scored for the the Giants in the final minute of the second before Tyus Sparks struck in the first minute of the third to tie the game at 3-3.

Cameron Schmidt then buried the game winner with a power play marker at 13:06 of the period. After a turnover at the Blazers blueline, Aaron Obobaifo fed Schmidt for a tap-in off the rush to make it 4-3, before Sparks added an empty netter to secure the win.

The Blazers fall to 6-6-1-1 on the 2025-26 Western Hockey League season, good for 14 points in 14 games. They’re seventh in the Western Conference and fourth in the B.C. Division.

The Blazers host the Everett Silvertips Wednesday (Oct. 27) from Sandman Centre. Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m.
