Gleaning Abundance Program’s fall 2025 harvest yields thousands of pounds of fruit

KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Food Policy Council’s Gleaning Abundance Program has finished its harvest for 2025.

The group harvested just under 15,000 pounds worth of apples, apricots, pears and other fruit across Kamloops, roughly the weight of one male elephant.

In all, 66 backyards and two farms contributed to the harvest this year, and it will help provide local non-profits with fresh fruit.

“We have a bunch of organizations around town that are registered with us to receive the fruit. That donation portion is one-third of the harvest,” said Ruby Bruce, community engagement coordinator at the Kamloops Food Policy Council.

“We have twenty-six organizations right now on our list

The gleaning program used 10 per cent of its harvest for workshops.

“We’ve been kind of experimenting with workshops here at the store. We’ve been making those apple and pear chips. They’re really delicious and they’re really easy to make, even at home in your oven,” Bruce added.

“It’s a test round of doing workshops and seeing what kind of processing we can do with the fruit.”

The organization has asked for more homes in Kamloops to sign up for the program.
