River search teams plan to return to area of interest after weekend search for missing Kamloops man

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops Search and Rescue recently sent a team back out on the Thompson River to renew a search for a young man who leapt from the Overlanders Bridge in late July. Volunteers went back out with specialized technology over the weekend to continue the search that began on July 30 after Braden Wallace-Peters jumped off the bridge in a stunt-gone-wrong.

KSAR President Paula Davies says searchers were back on the river Saturday (Oct. 18) with a human remains dog team from Central Okanagan Search and Rescue (COSAR).

“This time it was a little bit different. We used a lot of technology and we also used one of the dogs from COSAR who has very good results detecting human remains from the water,” explains Davies. “We had several teams out there and, at the end of the day, what we concluded was the dog did detect something in the high probability area, so we still believe he is in that area.”

KSAR says the river level has dropped but will need to lower more for the team to gain better visibility. Another search is being planned for the near future, depending on weather conditions and water levels.

“The team is thinking of the family. We did see them out there on Saturday. They were searching as well,” says Davies. “Our hearts and our thoughts go out to the family.”

Family and friends of Wallace-Peters have maintained a consistent search presence since he disappeared and a GoFundMe has also been formed to support the people who continue coming to Kamloops to look.
