MERRITT — The highway maintenance contractor in the Merritt area is alerting drivers to watch for snow near the Coquihalla Summit this Thanksgiving long weekend.

Yellowhead Road and Bridge (YRB) Nicola says there could be as much as 5 cm of snow on the Hope to Merritt section of the Coquihalla, as a cold front that is moving through the B.C. interior will combine with moisture from an upper lower moving through Washington.

“There is the potential for road snow accumulation tonight,” YRB Nicola said in a statement. “All high elevation routes could see wet snow, ice, or heavy rain, depending on temperatures.”

“Please drive to conditions and ensure you give plows ample room while they work to maintain roads. Watch for flashing lights, and reduce speed.”

As of publishing, Environment Canada has not issued a weather alert for the Coquihalla Highway. A special weather statement is in effect for the Okanagan Connector between Merritt and Kelowna as well as Highway 3 through the Kootenay Pass.

The weather agency is calling for “highly variable total accumulations” between 2 and 10 cm on those two highways between Saturday (Oct. 11) afternoon and possibly Thanksgiving Monday.

A snowfall warning is also in effect for Highway 3 between Hope to Princeton via the Allison Pass with between 10 and 20 cm of snow expected by Sunday (Oct. 12) afternoon.

Winter tires requirements took effect in B.C. on Oct. 1 and these provincial regulations will remain in place until the spring.
