Rotating job action coming into effect this weekend for striking postal workers

KAMLOOPS — Some Canada Post delivery service will begin flowing again as the union representing more than 55,000 Canada Post workers shifts to rotating strike action.

CUPW Local 758 first vice-president Aaron Arseneau says this means Kamloops members will be shifting between walking the picket lines and delivering.

“Kamloops, because we rely so much on Vancouver, and Vancouver and Toronto will be two of the places they focus on a lot, the big plants,” he explains, “we won’t have a lot of mail coming in. We’re also very strategic because we send a lot of mail up to northern BC and we are like a layaway station between Calgary and Vancouver. I think Kamloops will be one of the cities that is out (on picket) somewhat often.”

According to Arseneau, CUPW’s national executive board and negotiating committee met with the federal government Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 8) and the decision to bring in rotating job action followed shortly after that.

As for what’s next, Arseneau says that’s still up in the air.

“Anything could happen. We’ll be in job action until we get a contract, so however long that takes. But I mean from here, we could go full strike, we could do an overtime ban again, full flyer ban again, and the corporation could also lock us out at any minute.”

Canada Post issued the country-wide strike on September 25 after federal changes to Canada Post’s business model, which does include the eventual end of door-to-door mail delivery for nearly all households.
