WINTER TIRES

Despite warm weather local mechanics say it’s a good time to change over tires

KAMLOOPS – It’s time to break out winter tires.

If travel plans are made that require the use of the mountain highways like the Coquihalla, winter tires are required as provincial regulations took effect on Oct. 1.

“It’s that time of the year. If you’re going to travel on the Coquihalla, you have to have mountain and snowflake (or mud and snow) tires. You need them as of Oct. 1. Everybody’s coming in to change the tires to get ready for the snow when it does come,” said Michael Donaldson, owner of Integra Tires.

Checking tires is important, Donaldson said.

Making sure winters are still in good shape and have plenty of grip makes highway travel a lot safer.

“Most of the time, tires are good for five to six years. Then you just have to see how much tread is on the tire there. A winter tire is effective until 40 per cent. After 40 per cent and below, it becomes more like an all-season tire — still a decent traction tire, but not great,” said Donaldson.

Changing back to summer tires on all B.C. highways can happen in April of next year.
