WolfPack fall to top-ranked UBC in final road game of Canada West season

VANCOUVER — The TRU WolfPack weren’t able to outmatch the top ranked women’s soccer team in the nation on a Sattuday (Oct. 5) night in Vancouver.

The WolfPack fell 2-0 to the UBC Thunderbirds, who struck twice late in the second half to come away with all three points. Zoelle Apps opened the scoring in the 79th minute, before Maddy Norman doubled UBC’s lead in the 83rd minute.

It was UBC’s eleventh win of the season as they improved to a perfect 11-0 in Canada West. They haven’t allowed a goal in their last 10 games, though Saturday’s result was the first time they failed to score more than three in a game since late August.

“I can’t be more proud of the effort we put in,” WolfPack head coach Mark Pennington said. “It’s not often you hear UBC celebrate the way that they did which just shows that it was a tough game. It speaks volumes to where the program has come that we are disappointed in giving up a couple late goals to a team that has won 28-straight Canada West games.

“It took [UBC] until the 80th minute to break us down and that’s credit to the girls, they worked hard. If we bring that level of compete to every game then things will be good.”

Floor Ursem made eight saves for the WolfPack, who faced 22 total shots, ten of which were on targer. TRU mustered two shots on goal, one of which forced the save from UBC’s Dakota Beckett.

The loss means TRU has dropped to 5-7, which has them in a tie with the 4-3-3 Victoria Vikes for third place in the Pacific Division, though TRU has played 12 games to Victoria’s 10.

The WolfPack are off next weekend and they’ll close out the regular season against the UBC Okanagan Heat at Hillside Stadium on Oct. 18 and 19. The Heat are in fifth place in the division with a 3-5-2 record through 10 games.

“We have two big games around the corner and our playoff hopes lay in getting results out of those,” Pennington said. “We have a week off now so we will get ourselves ready for those games against UBCO.”
