KAMLOOPS — JP Hurlbert had a four point night but the Kamloops Blazers gave up four third period goals in a 6-4 loss to the Portland Winterhawks Saturday (Oct. 4) at Sandman Centre.

The 17-year-old Hurlbert had two goals and two assists Saturday to move to a WHL-leading 14 points from five games. The ‘Texas Tornado’ also leads all WHL skaters in goals with nine.

Hurlbert scored the fourth goal of the game late in the first period which made it a 2-2 affair.

Portland was up 2-1 inside seven minutes as Kayd Ruedig and Max Pšenička struck for the nomadic visitors, who are playing the first 11 games of the season on the road because of renovations at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Natham Behm opened the scoring for the Blazers at 2:47 of the period, as he made it a 1-1 game.

Hurlbert then scored the only goal of the second and assisted on Tommy Lafreniere’s early third period marker, which had the Blazers up 4-2.

Kamloops, however, wasn’t able to capitalize on their lead as they allowed the Winterhawks to chip away in the final period. Goals from Jordan Duguay and Pšenička’s second tied things up at 4-4, before Jake Gustafson scored the winner with his first career WHL goal.

Duguay then added an insurance goal into the empty net just 21 seconds later to ice the game.

Blazers goaltender Ivans Kufterins stopped 30 of 35 shots in a losing effort, while Ondrej Štěbeták was victorious with 24 saves on 28 shots.

This was the Blazers final home game for a couple of weeks as they prepare to head out on their Eastern Conference road trip. The Blazers are next in action this Friday (Oct. 10) against the Prince Albert Raiders.

They’ll also play in Saskatoon, Regina, Moose Jaw, Brandon, and Swift Current before returning home to face the Medicine Hat Tigers at Sandman Centre on Friday, Oct. 24.
