Parole board tightens leash for former Kamloops man who killed pregnant girlfriend 25 years ago

KAMLOOPS — The Parole Board of Canada has extended day parole for a former Kamloops man who admitted to killing his pregnant girlfriend in 2000.

However, the board is not extending his term as long as it did earlier this year.

Five months pregnant, Angel Fehr disappeared in April of 2000. Her body was eventually found in a barrel buried in a rural property near 100 Mile House.

Trent Larsen was arrested in 2019 and, two years later, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and committing an indignity to a dead body.

He was sentenced to more than eight years in prison but was granted day parole in September 2024. Last February, that day parole was extended for six months, even though the parole board said it was “troubled” by Larsen’s poor attitude and lack of commitment to a board-imposed Community Management Program.

In its latest decision dated September 12, the board notes Larsen participates in some reintegration programs but not in others and frequently demonstrates a poor attitude. It notes he was laid off from a construction job and has had trouble finding another job, something he blames on media coverage of his case.

Correctional Services Canada (CSC) recommended day parole be extended another six months, but the parole board decided on four months, saying it needs to see significant improvement in Larsen’s attitude and behaviour.

“While the CSC expects to see this improvement over the six-month duration of a day parole, the board is of the opinion that a more expedient improvement is required, and that it is necessary to hear from you directly about these improvements on the occasion of your next hearing,” notes the decision.
