KAMLOOPS — Kamloops experienced its warmest month of September on record, according to data that goes back to 1890.

Preliminary numbers from Environment Canada show the average mean temperature in Kamloops last month was 19.5 C, about 3.5 C above normal. The warm September came on the heels of one of the warmest months of August in Kamloops.

Meteorologist Derek Lee says the warm September temperatures was the result of a ridge of high pressure that lingered in the Kamloops region. The warmest temperature recorded in Kamloops during the month was 36.9 C on Sept. 3.

Summer-like temperatures persisted into the middle of the month, with Lee noting a daytime high of 33 C on Sept. 13.

“Whenever you get a ridge of high pressure, that generally means nice and dry weather,” Lee told CFJC Today. “Even looking out into the near future, it looks like that ridge of high pressure is holding strong once again on the weekend. We can see some dry conditions and mainly sunny weather continuing for the area.”

Environment Canada is predicting temperatures to be above normal for much of B.C., including Kamloops, throughout the fall.

“I don’t think we’re out of the woods in terms of being cool at any time soon. But the long-term forecast, even though it does say warmer than normal, doesn’t mean that every day will be above normal,” Lee added.

Meantime, Environment Canada recorded 3.4 millimetres of precipitation at Kamloops Airport in September, well below the monthly norm of 24 millimetres.

According to the weather agency’s seasonal forecast, Lee says its promising that Kamloops will get occasional showers before the first snowfall.
