Arrest made in Saturday assault in Kamloops; RCMP searching for missing backpack

KAMLOOPS — Police in Kamloops say a suspect is in custody in connection with a serious assault that took place early Saturday (Sept. 27) morning.

Kamloops RCMP did not release any more details about the person they have in custody, saying “no further details regarding the investigation can be shared at this time as the file remains ongoing.”

They did say the victim — who was previously identified as a 39-year-old Kamloops man — is suffering from serious life-threatening injuries. Police noted the assault took place in the 700-block of Notre Dame Drive.

RCMP said Thursday (Oct. 2) that the Serious Crime Unit is leading the investigation owing to the “severity of the incident.”

“This incident was a senseless attack,” said Cpl. Dave Marshall, a supervisor for the Kamloops RCMP’s Serious Crime Unit. “The victim is known to be a kind and generous person who is described as helpful to other residents at the Merit Place shelter.”

Police are also asking for help in locating a missing black and grey backpack, though they did not say who it belonged to.

“Based on information gained from the investigation, the backpack was likely discarded somewhere in the Sahali, North Shore or downtown area of Kamloops; possibly near a wooded or shoreline area between the Merit Place Shelter and the 200-block of Tranquille Road,” the RCMP statement added.

People who spotted the backpack or anyone who picked it up is asked to contact the Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000 and cite file 2025-32253.
