Kamloops postal workers take picket lines to Purolator

KAMLOOPS — Canada Post strike action has extended into another week, with the federal jobs minister urging the company to table a new offer to the union.

It comes as Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) members in Kamloops have begun picketing outside of a Purolator location.

The union walked off the job last week in response to sweeping federal changes that would end daily mail delivery, shut down more rural post offices and bring in community mailboxes. CUPW cites the move as an attack on jobs.

Starting Monday, CUPW Local 758 members in Kamloops have set up in front of Purolator on Laval Cresecent. Aaron Arseneau, the first vice president for CUPW Local 758, says it’s because Canada Post owns a majority stake in Purolator.

“What happens when we are out on job action, a lot of our work tends to go to Purolator, so we’re just trying to spread the message of ‘what reason would Canada Post have to bargain in good faith when a lot of that work just goes somewhere else and they make money anyways?” he reiterates.

Contract negotiations hit another standstill after Canada Post cited $5 billion in losses since 2018 as its reasoning for not agreeing to the union’s counter-offers. In January of this year, the federal government agreed to give Canada Post a $1-billion loan to prop up operations.

“This money they said was going to go to day-to-day services to keep the business afloat, but that’s not what happened,” Arseneau claims. “The money got put through Purolator and the company bought a $900-million brokerage company. This narrative — that is not true. They’re not using this money for day-to-day operations. They’re using it for more investments.”

While a picket line is set up outside of the Kamloops site, the union says they are not preventing work vehicles from coming or going.
