Driver in 2023 crash that killed TRU volleyball player to be sentenced in November

KAMLOOPS — A date has been set for a sentencing hearing in the case of the 2023 crash that killed a TRU volleyball player and seriously injured two others.

On November 29, 2023, Colval Abbinett was behind the wheel of a pickup truck that slammed into a car on McGill Road. The crash killed Owyn McInnis and left Riley Brinnen and Owen Waterhouse with life-altering injuries.

Last June, Abbinett pleaded guilty to one count of driving without due care and attention.

A second count of driving without reasonable consideration is expected to be stayed after sentencing.

At a court appearance earlier this month, Abbinett told the judge he was without a lawyer but planned to have one in place in time for sentencing.

The hearing is set for November 5 at the Kamloops courthouse.
