COLLINS: Dictator or demented old man?

DONALD TRUMP’S LEGACY will see him described as a troubled soul who led America into the ground with his dictatorial policies. Make America Great Again caught on with voters but it was only Trump and a handful of his ultra-rich cronies who got better. The litany of his stupid and destructive policies will be difficult to erase and the US economy will take decades to recover, and trust in America may never recover.

Is Trump demented? Many think so, citing his irrational behaviour, his poor decision-making and his delusion about his own personal power. His threats against other countries and against citizens even within the U.S., his rollercoaster flip-flopping on tariffs and confusion in his speeches has caused fear in some circles that the president is losing his grip on his country and his increased confusion would lead some to have that view.

I believe there is some truth to that theory. But deep down, I believe that every movement Trump has made, every comment and directive he has issued, his injection of his policies on immigration and law enforcement, are all part of his master plan to become an authoritarian or dictatorial president who runs the country with an iron fist and tolerates no opposition. Trump’s actions are all designed to put residents in a state of fear, putting soldiers in various cities to cause confusion as to who’s in charge, the policies on abortion and transgender men and women which have created panic among those groups, and finally the effort to deport people who are purported to be in this country illegally, are all part of Trump’s plan to be seen as the saviour of the values we have lost over time.

He has curried the support of southern white evangelical Christian groups, some of whom actually believe Trump has been sent by God to lead them. Trump has applauded himself for bringing church and state closer together, instead of separating them as we have done for decades. And yet Trump himself espouses few Christian values. Anyone who says “I hate my opponents” is not a Christian.

There can be no doubt that Trump’s master plan is to create a white supremacist country where he becomes the leader of all.

As is your right, many of you may scoff at some of these ideas, but you watch what happens over the next couple of decades. Values will continue to be eroded, more people will be living in fear as Big Brother watches them, there will be more attacks on government officials who see things differently than the president. And then there’s the attack on judges who rule against the dictator — my words — and people who are experts in various disciplines who will stand up for the truth.

And if you don’t stand up and be counted now, you are setting yourself up for a rude awakening. And it will not be a pretty sight.
