Residents of Peachland, B.C., return home, remain on alert due to wildfire

PEACHLAND — All residents of Peachland, B.C., who were forced out of their homes by a wildfire on Thursday have been allowed to return home.

A statement from Central Okanagan Emergency Operations on Saturday says the evacuation order prompted by the Munro Lake wildfire has been reduced, but remains in effect for an industrial area in the Okanagan Valley community.

Residents have been asked to stay ready to leave on short notice.

The operations centre says no structure losses have been reported as a result of the fire that has grown to span just over three square kilometres.

The initial evacuation order had covered 325 addresses in the area, and some residents were allowed to return home on Friday.

The BC Wildfire Service says about 60 firefighters and four helicopters have been assigned to the blaze, which was discovered on Thursday.

An update from the service on Saturday says fire behaviour had decreased Friday night, though strong winds were in the forecast.

The fire was threatening the Munro Lake forest service road, it adds.

The suspected cause of the blaze is human activity, the service says.
