KAMLOOPS — Heroes of the past gathered on Landsdowne Street at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 52 for a buffet-style lunch.

The event had two Legion members who received their 50-year tokens.

It’s more than just the free food and ice-cold beer; it’s about the camaraderie and socializing with fellow legion members.

“We ask any veteran in the town who would like to come and join us for lunch, social time, and camaraderie. That’s what the luncheon is for today,” Mike Young, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 52 president said.

The lunch is part of a larger Legion week which began Sunday. Events are lined up for the next few days, including a sold-out tribute to Elvis and Johnny Cash.

“With the Legion week, it’s to honour our veterans. Not just our military veterans, but our RCMP veterans, those of us who have served,” Young said.

The Legion emphasizes the importance of attracting new and young members to sustain this vital community space.

“It definitely has a factor in the future. It’s like most organizations that are like ours. Unless you have the younger blood joining as older veterans fade into the sunset. We need the younger generation to take over and keep the doors open,” Young said.
