KAMLOOPS — A section of Seymour Street in downtown Kamloops will remain open to traffic, as construction crews working to replace a sewer main line along Fourth Avenue continue to move further south.

The City of Kamloops says there is one lane currently open for vehicles traversing east on Seymour Street and that delays can be expected, especially during peak travel times.

“[The closures on Fourth and Seymour] won’t take very long and we’re keeping things open while we do the work,” Matt Kachel, the city’s infrastructure delivery divisional manager, told CFJC Today.

“We need to get the sewer across the street and will get out of the way as soon as this is complete.”

A two-block section of Fourth Avenue — between Victoria Street and St. Paul Street — is currently closed to traffic, though the city says crews are expected to pave the section between Victoria Street and Seymour Street on Monday (Sept. 22).

The city also says starting next week, vehicle access to the parking lot at Fourth and Seymour — the site of the future Kamloops Centre for the Arts — will only be available via Seymour Street.

Work to upgrade the sewer main at Fourth Avenue and Lansdowne Street began on July 7, and it is expected to wrap up this November at Fourth Avenue and Battle Street.

This sewer main project – which builds off last year’s work along Lansdowne Street – is being done to upgrade capacity downtown for the City Gardens development as well as the Kamloops Centre for the Arts which is set to begin construction soon.

“We understand the impact this is having on businesses, motorists and pedestrians, and crews are adjusting their work hours to get this portion of the work completed as quickly as possible,” a statement from the City of Kamloops said.
