VICTORIA, B.C. — Kamloops hockey product Reggie Newman has been named the tenth captain of the Victoria Royals.

The 20-year-old Newman is preparing for his fifth – and final – season in the Western Hockey League. He’s been a mainstay of the Royals lineup ever since he was drafted in the fourth-round of the 2020 WHL draft.

The veteran forward has 44 goals and 112 points in 232 regular season games going back to the 2021-22 season. He also added two goals and eight points in 15 playoff games over the past two seasons.

“Reggie leads by example through his work ethic and commitment to getting better each day” Royals’ Head Coach James Patrick said. “He is respected by his teammates and has earned the opportunity to lead our team”.

Newman is coming off a stint with the Winnipeg Jets’ Prospects Showdown team in Montreal. He has also been invited to development opportunities with the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Utah Mammoth and the Arizona Coyotes.

Prior to his time in the WHL, Newman played for the Yale Hockey Academy’s U15 and U18 prep teams. He also spent time with the Thompson Blazers’ U15 AAA team in the 2018-19 season.

Newman and the Royals will play four games against the Kamloops Blazers this season. The two teams will meet in Victoria in early February and in Kamloops on Family Day Monday (Feb. 16) and again in early March.
