KAMLOOPS — The Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) is hoping to make it easier for the construction industry and residents with DIY projects to reduce landfill waste and save money.

The TNRD announced the launch of the Construction and Demolition Toolkit Friday (Sept. 12). The document contains guidance on waste diversion, a directory of local recycling and salvage services and detailed information on local disposal regulations.

In a news release, the TNRD says the goals of the toolkit including helping residents and businesses plan waste hauling before a project begins, sorting material for diversion from regional landfills and changing the perception of construction materials from waste to valuable resources.

“Construction and demolition waste makes up approximately 24 per cent of the total waste stream in the TNRD, which is a significant environmental challenge, Adriana Mailoux, the TNRD’s manager of solid waste and recycling says. “By sorting materials like wood, metal and concrete, not only can we divert reusable resources from the landfill, but large projects can also save thousands of dollars in disposal costs.”
