KAMLOOPS — Organizers of the Terry Fox Run in Kamloops say this year’s edition of the annual charity run broke a 40-year-old fundraising record.

Run organizer Sue Steenson told CFJC Today that Kamloops and area residents helped raise over $63,000 and counting, noting that figure surpassed the previous record of $59,000 raised in 1985.

“We haven’t added in our t-shirt sales or donations that can come in until the end of September,” Steenson said.

“We are so grateful that Kamloops showed up in terms of my committee that helped organize, the donations for our silent auction from local businesses, and all our volunteers. We couldn’t have done it without them and with the community involvement.”

“Jay Michi and Dan McNamee from Jensen Law started a challenge to get the lawyers to donate and we thank them as the law community brought in over $20,000.”

Steenson said while that friendly challenge issued to Kamloops lawyers helped boost fundraising totals, she wasn’t able to pinpoint if that was the only reason for the record-breaking haul.

“It’s the 45th anniversary since Terry ran the Marathon of Hope and we spent some time going around Kamloops with our life-size cutout of Terry Fox to get people excited about the run,” Steenson added.

“I hope that helped because they showed up. We had over 500 people at Riverside Park.”

Among B.C. communities, only the runs in Vancouver, Victoria, and Terry’s hometown of Port Coquitlam brought in more money that Kamloops this year, according to the Terry Fox Foundation.

“It was $55,000 this morning, so we’ve gone up even more,” Steenson said. “The $61,000 figure online doesn’t include the money that we collected on site on Sunday.”

“We don’t compare with some of the big cities in Canada but we’re doing very well for B.C.”

Steenson is confident that the Kamloops community will be able to raise over $100,000 during next year’s Terry Fox Run, which will be held on Sept. 20, 2026.

“Terry’s dream was $1 for every Canadian and we would like to change our goal to $1 for every Kamloopsian,” Steenson said. “We’re over 100,000 people and $1 each, I think we could do it.”

“We’re going to go after the accountants and the real estate people and the medical community. I think they should all have a challenge next year.”

You can still donate to the Terry Fox campaign in Kamloops here. Steenson said all proceeds go towards cancer research in Canada.

“These funds make a huge difference. That was Terry’s dream, that the money all go to cancer research so that we could actually end cancer someday,” Steenson said. “Cancer is a hard thing but the people who attended believe in Terry’s dream and it showed.”
