MERRITT, B.C. — The Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) has downgraded an evacuation alert that was issued in connection with the Mine Creek wildfire.

The alert, which was issued on Wednesday (Sept. 3), covered 85 properties in Electoral Area “N” including the community of Brookmere and areas south towards the border with the Okanagan-Similkameen Regional District and the Fraser Valley Regional District

“Should conditions change, an Evacuation Alert and/ or an Evacuation Order will be reinstated as necessary,” the TNRD said, in a statement.

The Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) has also lifted its evacuation alert that was in place for the Coquihalla Summit Recreation Area.

The Mine Creek fire is still estimated to be around 30-square kilometres in size, and it has been mapped at that size since Sept, 6.

“Fire behaviour is expected to be Rank 1 (smouldering ground fire) and Rank 2 (low vigour surface fire),” the BC Wildfire Service said in a Sept. 12 update. “With lower relative humidity drying out forest fuels and the potential for dry and gusty winds, there is a possibility of Rank 3 (moderately vigorous surface fire) fire behaviour.”

The BC Wildfire Service says with the potential for increased fire behaviour, smoke from within the fire perimeter may be more visible to drivers along the Coquihalla Highway. The highway remains open with a travel advisory in effect.

“While warm temperatures are forecast to continue into the weekend, shorter days heading into fall and fair overnight recoveries may help moderate fire behaviour,” the BC Wildfire Service added.

The lightning-caused fire is still burning out of control and there are ground and aerial resources working to bring the blaze under control.

“We are asking the traveling public to exercise extreme caution when traveling through the Coquihalla Highway corridor,” the BC Wildfire Service added. “This is an active work site and our crews are working from the highway out along the north and south flanks.”

“Crews and equipment are also using the highway corridor and local forest service roads to move between sections of the incident.”
