Kamloops MLA calls on province to stabilize regional maternity care as TRFO stops accepting new referrals

KAMLOOPS — A Kamloops MLA is calling on the B.C. government to stabilize maternity care in the city.

The comments from Kamloops-Centre MLA Peter Milobar of the Official Opposition Conservative Party of B.C. come one day after it was unveiled that the Thompson Region Family Obstetrics (TRFO) clinic at Royal Inland Hospital was once again no longer accepting new referrals.

In the letter to Kamloops-and-area healthcare providers dated Sept. 3, TRFO says its doctors will care for its current patient load over the next six months until six weeks after delivery. Meanwhile, they will “focus all other efforts on providing acute on-call obstetrical coverage on labour and delivery.”

Meantime, Interior Health is advising pregnant patients to contact their primary care physician or use services such as the First Steps Early Pregnancy Triage Clinic.

However, Milobar notes that 40 per cent of Kamloops residents don’t have a family doctor, and First Steps can only provide care to pregnant patients for up to 30 weeks.

“When will Thompson Region Family Obstetrics open referrals again, and what needs to be in place for that to happen? As it stands, this is a service gap that will continue on indefinitely – and that is completely unacceptable,” Milobar states in a news release issued Thursday (Sept. 11). ““Expectant mothers seeking healthcare in our region have faced several years of volatility. We call on Health Minister Josie Osborne to lay out a plan to permanently stabilize maternity care in Kamloops.”

Interior Health is also asking pregnant patients in Kamloops who are up to 10 weeks out from delivery to visit Royal Inland Hospital.
