WESTWOLD, B.C. — A section of Douglas Lake Road in the Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) is still closed to all traffic, nearly 48 hours after it was impacted by a mudslide that happened Tuesday (Sept. 9) evening

TNRD Emergency Program Coordinator Mike Knauff said the Ministry of Transportation and Transit (MOTT) is working to reopen the road after the slide, which happened about 15 kilometres south of Westwold.

“We understand that MOTT is making efforts to reopen the road to a single lane of alternating traffic in the next day or so,” Knauff told CFJC Today. “There were multiple slides on Douglas Lake Road and it’s certainly not passable to traffic.”

“[MOTT has] had a geotechnical engineer determine that its safe to remove the debris.”

Knauff also said there was one property in the area below the slide that was impacted by mud. He said the TNRD was told that it is safe for the occupant to be in their home.

“We’re going to be doing a further assessment to determine if there are any other safety issues,” Knauff added, noting no injuries were reported after the mudslide.

According to DriveBC, an update on the status of the road is expected around 2:00 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 11). Updates can be found online here. In the meantime, areas like Salmon Lake and Douglas Lake can be accessed via Nicola Lake.

Knauff said the mudslide happened in an area that was impacted by the White Rock Lake fire in 2021. He also noted its “highly likely” that the two events are linked.

“It’s very common after wildfires to see these sorts of events,” Knauff said. “There was a very significant rainstorm in the area. It was not just your normal fall rain, but a really intense thunderstorm cell that brought significant rain in a very concentrated area.”
