KAMLOOPS – September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day. This is also National Suicide Prevention Week. Mental health organizations are taking the opportunity to spread awareness about protecting mental well-being.

“These are always good opportunities for organizations like Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) to message that there are resources available, to get the word out that way about things that people can do to seek help,” said Brett Mineer, the community and communications coordinator for CMHA Kamloops.

The CMHA is focused on breaking down stigma and making sure difficult yet important conversations are allowed to happen.

“It is important that we break down stigmas around suicide so that people can have these discussions with their friends or loved ones. If they notice somebody in their life is struggling, or if you yourself are struggling, you need to know that you’re not facing some kind of social embarrassment or something for coming forward,” said Mineer.

Anyone struggling with thoughts of suicide is asked to contact 988, the National Suicide Crisis Helpline.
