Kamloops drivers urged to slow down in school zones ahead of back-to-school

KAMLOOPS – The speed limit around school zones is 30 kilometres per hour, and at South Sahali Elementary Wednesday (Sept. 10), volunteers from Kamloops Crime Prevention were reminding drivers to adhere to the limit and stay off mobile devices. Vehicle-pedestrian fatalities have a much higher chance of happening in September.

“We want to remind people that school zones are now in effect. Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., school zones are in effect, which is at the most 30km/h. That is in the best possible conditions. If it’s busier or the weather starts to change and we need to slow down, then let’s slow down a little bit,” said Cpl. Dana Napier of the Kamloops RCMP.

People are reminded to cross on the crosswalks and, when biking, not to listen to music to better pay attention to the road.

“In the southern Interior, about 43 children are injured in school zone vehicle-pedestrian collisions. Obviously, these are collisions that are 100 per cent preventable,” said Ingrid Brakop, safety and community coordinator with ICBC.

Using cell phones while driving is illegal and increases the chance of the driver or pedestrians getting injured.

“We want to make sure that for drivers, it’s just to really stay off of the cell phones and the mobile devices. We don’t want any distractions. There are lots of children going to and from school. Sometimes they get excited and might jump out, so we want to remind drivers to expect the unexpected,” said Napier.
