Blind Bay woman defrauded out of $5,000 in bail money scam over the phone

BLIND BAY, B.C. — Police are reminding residents to be extra cautious when accepting unsolicited phone calls after a woman from Blind Bay reported that she was defrauded out of $5,000.

On Aug. 21, the woman said she received a phone call from a non-B.C. area code and was told by a man that her daughter was arrested after getting into a collision due to being intoxicated, and she needed bail money.

According to Salmon Arm RCMP in a news release issued Wednesday (Sept. 10), the woman immediately e-Transferred $2,000 to an email address and deposited $3,000 into a bank account number, both provided by the scammer.

Police say the woman called her daughter after sending the money, although the daughter explained she had not been arrested and never needed bail money.
