KAMLOOPS — The Thompson Rivers University (TRU) WolfPack women’s team scored twice in a four minute span as they beat the Fraser Valley (UFV) Cascades in Canada West Soccer at Hillside Stadium Friday (Sept. 5) night.

Kat Stewart and Mackenzie Lalonde scored early in the second half as the WolfPack beat the Cascades 2-0 for their first win of the season.

“I thought we did some really good things throughout the whole game. At halftime I didn’t quite think we had hit our stride and we talked about how we had another couple gears to hit,” WolfPack head coach Mark Pennington said.

“We targeted set pieces today as a good opportunity for us and barring some luck we could have had a few more. We were good value for the win so obviously I’m really happy.”

Floor Ursem kept her third clean sheet of the season in just her fifth game. The Dutch netminder is already second in WolfPack program history for shutouts in a Canada West season.

The WolfPack men also played the Cascades on the road in Abbotsford but they continue to await their first win of the season. TRU conceded four first half goals as they slumped to a 5-0 loss at Rotary Stadium.

Kevin Mailand registered a first half hat-trick for the Cascades who also got goals from Michael Beecroft in the first half and Mateo Brazinha in the second half.

Toran Rutherford made four saves for the WolfPack while Matheus De Souza earned the shutout for UFV.

The WolfPack women will host the Trinity Western Spartans at Hillside Stadium in a 5:30 p.m. kickoff Saturday (Sept. 6) night. The men will also play the Spartans in Langley this evening.
