Paving work underway on two-block section of Columbia Street in downtown Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — Paving work is underway on Columbia Street between First and Third Avenue in downtown Kamloops.

There are a number of traffic control personnel on scene this Saturday (Sept. 6) morning, and drivers are being told to expect delays on the two block stretch and to follow all signage and traffic control personnel.

According to the city, this paving work is expected to wrap up today itself, and they note it was intentionally scheduled for the weekend to reduce impacts to weekday traffic on the major thoroughfare.

The city also says line painting work is set to be done in the middle of this month. Unlike the milling work – which was done on Aug. 23 – or work to prep the road for paving and the actual paving work itself, that line painting work will take place at night.

This work is a precursor to a “larger, more complex project” on Columbia Street between Third Avenue and McGill Road, which is scheduled for 2027. In addition to milling and paving work, that project also includes work on a watermain following a break last year.

“That one will be much more impactful than the one we are doing [now] because we will have deep utilities to build, as well,” Matt Kachel, the city’s Infrastructure Delivery Manager, told CFJC Today.

Kachel also said this year’s paving work has been “strategically timed” to minimize future traffic impacts on Columbia Street.
