YALE, B.C. — (UPDATE 1:00 p.m.): The Trans-Canada Highway has reopened with a single lane of alternating traffic between Hope and Yale.

The highway had been closed in both directions after a fiery head-on crash between a semi-truck and a pickup truck. Police said the crash happened around 6:00 a.m. and they had expected that the highway would be closed for most of the day Friday (Sept. 5).

In an update at 12:43 p.m. DriveBC said the highway has been reopened with traffic control personnel on scene.

BC Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation as it appeals for video and witnesses to come forward. While its not clear what happened, police say they say the driver of the pickup was taken to hospital while the driver of the semi was not injured.

“We are making progress in this investigation, but we need more witnesses and dash camera video to get a complete picture of what happened,” BC Highway Patrol spokesperson Cpl. Michael McLaughlin said in a statement.

“We understand that major highway shutdowns cause major inconvenience, but we don’t want anyone else to get hurt.”

This update comes as the Coquihalla was also reopened to all traffic between Hope and Merritt after a two-day closure because of the Mine Creek fire.

Highway 3 from Hope to Princeton and Highway 99 from Lillooet to Pemberton are also open at this time, though DriveBC had been warning drivers trying to head between the Interior and the Lower Mainland to expect significant delays.

People who witnessed the crash on the Trans-Canada Highway or those with dash-cam video of it are asked to contact BC Highway Patrol – Chilliwack at 604-702-4039.
