Lytton, Lillooet set daily temperature record for third consecutive day as air quality alerts persist

LYTTON — Preliminary data from Environment Canada shows the Fraser Canyon communities of Lytton and Lillooet experienced record high temperatures for the third day in a row on Sept. 4.

According to Environment Canada, the mercury in the Lytton area reached 38.8 C on Thursday. It broke the old record of 37.1 C set in 1988, with records going back to 1921.

The Lillooet area tied a record of 36.7 C that was dated back to 1934, with records in this area going back to 1917

The two Fraser Canyon communities were among five in B.C. that either set or tied temperature records for Sept. 4. New records were also set in Summerland (31.5 C) and Tatlayoko Lake (32.1 C), while the Smithers area tied a record that dated back to 2006 with a temperature of 28.1 C.

Environment Canada lifted a heat warning for the Fraser Canyon area Friday (Sept. 5) evening, one day after it lifted a heat warning for much of the Kamloops-area.

The weather agency is forecasting a mainly sunny sky and a high of 31 C in Lytton this Saturday (Sept. 6). It’s also calling for a change of showers and a high of 28 C and 26 C on Sunday and Monday.

In Kamloops, the forecast is calling for a sunny high of 25 C on Saturday, and a chance of showers or thunderstorms on Sunday and Monday with a high of 27 C and 26 C respectively. It’s also expected to be smoky as a number of air-quality alerts remain in effect across the province.
