COLLINS: No time to have a weak stomach

IF YOU’RE A POLITICAN TODAY, you have to have a thick skin, a strong jaw, and a constitution that will withstand all that the world throws at you. Oh, and you must be able to juggle at least ten balls at a time, and you can never make a wrong decision. And you must attend every event that goes on in the area you serve, whether it’s at the municipal, provincial or federal level. These also apply to a person running a non-profit or some other group that has an impact on our lives.

For you see, according to the public, these leaders are seldom right. Everyone who sits on the sidelines knows more than those leaders do and aren’t afraid to say so — often now in more violent ways than ever before. And those who govern us are trying to juggle so many balls, and they aren’t going to be able to keep them all in the air. It’s just not possible.

Health care is an oxymoron, eldercare is okay because no one cares about seniors anyway, businesses face increases in costs everywhere they turn and many are just giving up, agriculture is struggling, and somehow the homeless problem is getting out of control.

So if we can’t keep all the balls in the air, which ones can we drop? Well, we’ll let eldercare drop, because those seniors are useless now and we don’t want to take care of them anyway. We’ll let the addicts get high in public places because we have no facilities and few resources , and what the hell, if they want to sleep outside, we’ve got lots of land they can use. We can’t find any doctors to practice so what’s the point in building new facilities?

Politicians always have to be in a state of flux and it’s not easy. Despite all the critics — and I am one of them — they have to provide a way forward, and that’s a tough one. The doors of opportunity will soon start to close and if we can’t find some common ground, we will find all the balls have fallen, and we will look like the sad-faced clown in the middle of the arena.

Although I criticize often, I‘m also appreciative of the tough decisions officials have to make. Even in good times, that’s the case. In these times, I think it’s almost impossible to find a solution that everyone can buy into. No one wants compromise anymore. The best advice I can offer — be strong, have the resolve to stand by your convictions, but have a fast horse saddled and ready just in case.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
