Kamloops Search and Rescue assists second overheated hiker in Tranquille Slot Canyons

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops Search and Rescue (KSAR) is reminding the public to be prepared after assisting a second overheated hiker in the Tranquille Slot Canyons in as many months.

KSAR says it was dispatched to the hiking area in the Lac Du Bois Grasslands by BC Ambulance Service at around 3:00 p.m. Monday (Sept. 1).

In a post to social media, KSAR says two of its members provided first aid and hydration to the hiker, then helped them exit the canyon.

After KSAR responded to a report of an overheated hiker in the same area on Canada Day, the volunteer search and rescue team is sounding the alarm about social media posts promoting the Tranquille Slots Canyons hike without detailing the risks involved.

“The trail is undeveloped, extremely steep, and descends into the Tranquille Valley,” KSAR stated. “The return hike, particularly in hot weather, can be physically demanding and hazardous for those who are not adequately prepared. During this recent rescue, KSAR members observed several other hiking parties who appeared to be ill-equipped for the challenging conditions.”

Residents are encouraged to research hiking routes and understand the physical demands of a trail before heading out. Additionally, they’re asked to pack water, emergency supplies and proper gear such as hiking boots.

A heat warning is in effect for the North and South Thompson regions until Thursday.
