HOPE, B.C. — A wildfire discovered along the Coquihalla Highway between Hope and Merritt on Monday (Sept. 1) has grown to 105 hectares in size.

The BC Wildfire Service says the Mine Creek wildfire north of the Coquihalla Summit Recreation Area is suspected to be caused by lightning.

In an update Monday evening, the wildfire service says the fire nearly 44 kilometres northeast of Hope is burning at Rank 4, meaning it’s a highly vigorous surface fire.

While the Mine Creek wildfire is highly visible from the Coquihalla Highway, the wildfire service says it’s currently burning upslope and not threatening any roads, structures or utilities.
