August was among the warmest in Kamloops’ recorded history: Environment Canada

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops experienced its third-warmest month of August, according to data tracked back to 1890.

Preliminary numbers from Environment Canada show the average mean temperature recorded in Kamloops in August 2025 was 23.6 C, about 2.3 C above normal.

Environment Canada says Kamloops set four record high daytime temperatures from Aug. 24 to 27. The weather agency adds three record high minimum temperatures were recorded in Kamloops as well.

A pair of heat warnings were issued for the South Thompson region in late August. The second heat warning issued by Environment Canada Sunday (Aug. 31) is expected to be in effect until Thursday. Heat warnings are also in place for the Fraser Canyon and North Thompson regions during that time.

“We do have some temperature records that could be set. [Tuesday] looks like it will be fine. On Wednesday and Thursday… it looks like the daily record could be in jeopardy for Kamloops,” Matt Loney, Environment Canada meteorologist, told CFJC Today. “Thunderstorm development could be an issue as we get toward the latter part of the week as we’ve got some moisture that looks like it wants to come into the province from the south.”

As of Tuesday, Loney says it’s uncertain when the ridge of high pressure prompting the heat will break down. However, he notes that widespread rainfall is not expected in Kamloops and area for the foreseeable future.

The dry forecast comes after 9.8 millimetres of precicipation was recorded at Kamloops Airport in August 2025. Loney says that’s just more than half the rainfall that’s typically expected.

“The one advantage we have right now is we’re in the tail end of summer, so the nights are getting longer and there is a bit more recovery. It could be worse,” Loney said. “The body needs to cool off and the spaces we inhabit need to cool off. For those that lack air conditioning… not having the ability to cool off a space at night becomes a challenge when you get day after day of these heat events.

“This air mass is such that precautions still need to be taken — certainly during the daytime, but even at night trying to get some cooler air into your dwelling is key to try and overcome the stress to the body.”

During the heat warning, residents are encouraged to get into air-conditioned spaces in the afternoons, seek shade if they’re outdoors, keep strenuous activities in the morning or late evening hours, stay hydrated and check in on those who live alone and are without air conditioning.
