Favourable wildfire season leads to fairly busy summer season at Sun Peaks Resort

SUN PEAKS, B.C. — It’s been a fairly busy summer season at Sun Peaks Resort this year in part because the wildfire situation hasn’t been as severe as in years past.

Sun Peaks Director of Communications Christina Antoniak says the resort has been seeing more visitors from other parts of B.C. this year, as people appear to be looking for more getaways within the province in lieu of trips to the United States.

“We kind of expected that going into this summer, so we’ve seen really strong numbers across the board with folks coming in for mountain biking or leisure holidays,” Antoniak told CFJC Today. “Our tour and group travel numbers are also really strong.”

“We see some international guests but that’s pretty consistent year-over-year with not much increase. We thought we’d see maybe a little bit of a bump from the U.S., from Washington state, but that is relatively flat, as well. But it’s great to see people in B.C. exploring their own province.”

With this year’s Peaks Pedal Fest behind us, Sun Peaks has marked the unofficial end to its summer season, though there is still about a month left before the official shut down.

The chairlifts at Sun Peaks Resort will stop turning after Sept. 28, which is also when the golf course will wrap up operations for the year.

While there has been an uptick in the number of active blazes in B.C. amid this spell of hot, unseasonal weather, Antoniak said Sun Peaks expects to continue to see strong visitor numbers in September – as long as the area continues to fare well on the wildfire front.

“We want a nice, well-rounded experience because we have a lot of people who come to Sun Peaks for a gentle escape from the city, so to speak, and if you’re not a hardcore mountain biker or hiker, there is still so much to experience in Sun Peaks,” Antoniak said.
