Heat warning reissued for Kamloops-area as daytime temperatures poised to soar into mid 30s

KAMLOOPS — As expected, Environment Canada has reissued a heat warning for the Kamloops-area as it forecasts temperatures to be above the warning threshold once again.

The weather agency says daytime temperatures will cross the 35 C mark while overnight lows will not go below 18 C for the next four days. This is the fourth heat warning of the summer and it comes about 48-hours after the previous heat warning was lifted.

“A ridge of high pressure anchored over B.C. is bringing very high temperatures to the region this week,” the warning said.

In Kamloops, Environment Canada is currently forecasting a day time high of 36 C on Labour Day Monday (Sept. 1) and a high of 38 C on Tuesday and Wednesday, with Friday (Sept. 4) expected to be around 34 C.

Overnight lows are expected to be around 17 C tonight and 18 C Monday through Wednesday night. There is also a 30 per cent chance of showers in the South Thompson area early this evening, but BC Wildfire Service Information Officer Taylor Stewart Shantz said it won’t be enough to dampen forest fuels or put out blazes.

“Our fire danger rating is high with pockets of extreme,” she said. “We’re encouraging people to exercise caution over the long weekend.”

In the Kamloops-area, a heat warning is issued when there are at least two consecutive days with a daytime high of at least 35 C and a nighttime low of at least 18 C in between.

“Temperatures are very high and there is a moderate risk to public health,” the weather alert issued at 5:00 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 31) said.

“Heat affects everyone, but the risks are greater for seniors, people who live alone, people with pre-existing health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease or respiratory disease, people with mental illness such as schizophrenia, depression or anxiety, people with substance use disorders, people with limited mobility.”
