SUN PEAKS, B.C. — With the Labour Day long weekend upon us, Sun Peaks Resort is gearing up to host the 11th edition of the Peaks Pedal Fest.

The annual event, which runs between Friday and Sunday (Aug. 29 to 31) this year, marks the unofficial end to the summer season at Sun Peaks, though there is still about a month left before the bike park officially shuts down.

“We’re proud to host a hallmark mountain biking event to close out the summer holidays. It’s the perfect opportunity for riding families to spend quality time together before the school year starts,” Sun Peaks Director of Communications, Christina Antoniak, said.

Launched in 2015 as a season wrap-up, the Peaks Pedal Fest features numerous races and community-focused events that draw riders from across the province.

Antoniak said new events – the Junior DH Champions and the Toyota Pacific Downhill Thrill – were added to the lineup last year.

“Our events team is already considering how to evolve the festival in years to come with innovative partnerships and activations,” she said. “These days we see riders from age two to 70 on bikes, a phenomenal shift that’s enhancing both our community and local economy.”

Antoniak said Sun Peaks has doubled the number of sports in the Junior DH Champions event from 50 to 100 due to high demand and a sellout last year.

“This race event is very unique in the landscape of DH bike racing, there’s nothing quite like it out there,” Antoniak said. “It’s designed to give young riders, ages 8-16, a glimpse into what downhill mountain bike racing is all about, but in a fun, non-intimidating environment.”

“The idea is to set them up for even greater success when they decide to race at the provincial level in the BC Cup series, and beyond.”

Over events at Peaks Pedal Fest include a cross-country bike scavenger hunt Friday tou Sunday, a chance to demo new bikes Saturday and Sunday as well as a grass dual slalom and foot down derby on Sunday.

There will also be a number of other family-friendly events this weekend include free live music Friday, the Bounce House Party Saturday, and an outdoor Family Movie Night at the Sun Peaks Centre on Sunday.
