TOBIANO, B.C. — The person who drowned in Tobiano last Saturday (Aug. 23) evening has been identified by police as a Thompson Rivers University international student.

In a news release Thursday (Aug. 28), RCMP said officers from the Tk’emlúps Rural detachment responded to reports that a swimmer had been in distress near Bruker Marina before they went under water.

While police did not release a name, Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Dana Napier said the swimmer “disappeared into the deep water and did not resurface.”

“Tobiano Fire Rescue, Kamloops Search and Rescue, Kamloops Fire Rescue along with the BC Conservation Service all attended and attempted to recover the body,” Napier said. “The RCMP Underwater Recovery Team was called and [they] removed the body.”

According to Kamloops Search and Rescue, the student’s body was found on the lake floor around 11:00 p.m. Saturday night. It was recovered the next day.

“The BC Coroners Service has been notified and is also investigating,” Napier added.

This is the third TRU international student death of this summer.

Jatin Garg, a 27-year-old from India, was swept away on July 6 after he went into the Thompson River at Overlander Park to retrieve a volleyball. His body was recovered on July 15.

According to The Omega student newspaper, Anotida Kimberly Maziziri, a 21-year-old Zimbabwean student, was killed in a crash near Valemount on July 11.

Police say people who witnessed Saturday’s drowning should contact the Kamloops RCMP detachment at 250-828-3000 and cite file 2025-27751 if they haven’t done so already.
