Changes coming to Tranquille Road detour ahead of upcoming school year

KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops is making adjustments to a detour route in Brocklehurst to mitigate congestion near Parkcrest Elementary once the new school year begins.

As work to replace a sewer main along Tranquille Road continues, the city is moving the detour route for vehicles from Parkcrest Avenue to Young Avenue, effective Friday (Aug. 29).

There will also be soft closures on Schreiner Street at Young Avenue and at Glenview Avenue, as well as on Tranquille Road at Windbreak Street and at Crestline Street. Only local traffic will be allowed past those road blocks.

A hard closure will also be implemented at the intersection of Glenview Avenue and Crestline Street, while the section of Tranquille Road between Schreiner Street and Downie Street will remain closed to through traffic.

No changes have been made to the transit detour route with westbound buses still running along Young Avenue with eastbound buses running along Fleetwood and Greenfield Avenues.

The truck and dangerous goods route will also continue to remain along Ord Road until December.

Work along Tranquille Road will pause for a winter break later this year and construction between Downie Street and Southill Street will resume in the spring. The city has said the entire sewer main project is scheduled to be done in the fall of next year.

This third phase of sewer work along Tranquille Road also includes a number of surface improvements like new sidewalks and a new multi-use path on an “integral” east-west active transportation corridor that was identified in the city’s Transportation Master Plan.

The first phase on Tranquille Road west of Crestline toward Kamloops Airport was completed in 2017, while the second phase between Southill Street and 12th Street was completed in 2021.
