Columbia Street paving a precursor to expanded work in 2027

KAMLOOPS — Constructions crews were busy over the weekend as they worked to mill the pavement along Columbia Street between First and Third Avenues.

Unlike some other projects underway in Kamloops, work on Columbia is expected to be completed quickly as crews will only be repaving the section and not doing any underground infrastructure work.

“It’s only about a two-week job. It’s not very long and we can be a little bit more nimble with that one because it’s just a ‘mill and fill’. And we have structured the work so that it doesn’t interfere with what is going on on Overlanders,” said Matt Kachel, City of Kamloops’ Infrastructure Delivery Manager.

Paving work is expected to be completed after the first week of September and it will be done outside of peak commuting hours.

The First-to-Third section is just one part of an overall bigger picture along Columbia as the city is to tackle the entire stretch leading up to McGill Road in the years to come.

“Third to McGill is the bigger project, which includes not just the paving but also some utility work,” said Kachel. “That is going to be scheduled for 2027, so we have a bit of time before that one starts.”

“That one will be much more impactful than the one we are doing [now] because we will have deep utilities to build, as well.”
