‘We’ve got nothing else to do but put our asses on the line’: Kamloops Broncos host Kodiaks Saturday

KAMLOOPS — No matter their record, the season is not lost.

Kamloops Broncos’ running back Cam Grzegorczyk takes that approach when discussing his B.C. Football Conference club, which is 0-4 ahead of a game against the Prince George Kodiaks, a 6:00 p.m. start on Saturday (Aug. 23) at Hillside Stadium.

“I think it kind of comes down to why you’re playing,” Grzegorczyk said. “If you’re just here to win, that’s one thing and that can really hurt. But if you’re here for the team, for the experience, for the love of the sport, it [losing] just makes you want to try harder next week. And I think something this team really brings is effort week after week.”

The Broncos – who have mustered a league-low 30 points in four games – were dealt a blow when returning starting quarterback Ryan Petersen was hurt before the season.

Kieran Beeler won the job in training camp, but was injured on the first drive of the campaign.

“We then went to Chase Witzel, who did an absolutely fantastic job, an 18-year old kid out of Kelowna whose still got a lot of learning room and a lot of ways to grow,” Broncos’ head coach Braden Vankoughnett said. “But we kind of stumbled across a quarterback in Carter Moberg, a fifth-year kid out of Regina who won a couple of Prairie Conference championships.”

B.C. Lions’ prospect receiver Colton Meikle said Moberg – who is picking up the offence on the fly – is a promising addition for the sputtering offence.

“He’s probably the key to victory,” said Meikle, noting team morale has fluctuated throughout the first four weeks of the season. “He’s been a key player for the Thunder for a few years and that’s a highly ranked team, so (it’s) great to have him.”

Moberg — who has completed 25 of 52 passes for 256 yards, three interceptions and one touchdown in two games for the Broncos this season — made a quick decision to leave his former club.

“I decided to move on from the Thunder,” he said. “My old coach, Scott MacAaulay, put me in contact with Coach Vanky and the same day I was out here. I just want to help this team get back on track this season, get some hope back in the boys.”

The Kodiaks are in post-season contention for the first time since joining the league four years ago, with a 2-2 record after recording their first win over the Langley Rams — 33-13 last weekend in Prince George.

Grzegorczyk’s take on the season thus far – that it cannot be judged solely on the club’s record – should not be confused with a lack of desire to post victories.

The running back is keen to avoid defeat this weekend, a loss that would further bury fading post-season aspirations.

“Win, baby, win,” he said. “We’re at the bottom and where else to go but up? We’ve got nothing else to do but put our asses on the line.”
