KAMLOOPS — The multi-use pathway along the Overlanders Bridge will officially reopen Friday (Aug. 22), as the City of Kamloops says crews have completed resurfacing work.

In a brief post on social media, the city says the pathway is expected to reopen around 6:00 p.m. Friday evening. It notes once the pathway is open, a detour route that was in place for cyclists and pedestrians will be removed.

“With the reopening, the free transit for cyclists crossing the bridge [on bus routes 1, 2, 3 and 10] will wrap up at the end of the day on Friday,” the city statement said.

The multi-use pathway was initially scheduled to reopen in mid-August, but it was postponed due to what the city said were “unexpected challenges, including rain.”

“Thank-you for your patience while crews completed the work,” the city statement added.

Work on the multi-use pathway began on July 14 in conjunction with work to replace bridge joints on the Overlanders Bridge. According to the city, crews applied a sand-textured epoxy coating on the pathway in a bid to improve safety and durability.

While the pathway is complete, crews are still working in the northbound lanes of the Overlanders Bridge. They were paving around the replaced bridge joints Friday morning.

The city says once paving is done, it will still be about another week before crews can switch over to working on the southbound lanes of the Overlanders Bridge.

“While it looks like it’s done and we are ready to switch over, there is a little bit more work to do,” Matt Kachel, the city’s Infrastructure Delivery Divisional Manager, said. “We need to do some cut outs and put some components in that need to cure a little bit, so we are looking towards the end of next week when we are going to do our switchover.”

“So far, things are looking really good and as most folks can see, we have made some good progress here in the last little bit.”

Kachel also said the entire Overlanders Bridge project is still on track to be done in early October.
