BCGEU calling for investigation into province’s response to North Kamloops bomb threat

KAMLOOPS — Employees at a provincial government office on the North Shore are refuting the province’s statement that emergency protocols were properly followed in response to a bomb threat.

The Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction office near Northills Mall received a threat on Tuesday (Aug. 19) from a person over the phone. The ministry told CFJC Today it sent staff home and closed the Kamloops office for most of the day but later reopened after receiving an “all clear” notice from the RCMP.

In a statement to CFJC Today, the BC General Employees’ Union (BCGEU) says the call to the North Shore office on Tuesday was a bomb threat. The union, which represents workers at the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction in Kamloops, adds it “has received reports from members that the timeline of events as laid out by the ministry does not line up with their experience.”

“Ensuring that workers arrive home safely after a day’s work is one of our union’s top priorities, and serious incidents like this one require investigation to verify that appropriate action was taken,” BCGEU stated.
