Kamloops batter hits historic home run at Canada Summer Games

Layla Spencer of Kamloops made national baseball history at the Canada Summer Games earlier this week in St. John’s, Nfld.

Female baseball is making its games debut this year and host Newfoundland played B.C. on Monday (Aug. 18) in the tournament-opening game.

Spencer, 15, crushed a three-run blast in the bottom of the first inning, recording the first home run in event history.

The baseball will be displayed in the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in St. Marys, Ont., according to a Baseball BC post on twitter.

B.C., which blanked Newfoundland 13-0, fell 16-6 to Alberta on Wednesday morning to drop to one win and one loss on the tournament.

Quebec (1-1) and B.C. are scheduled to square off on Wednesday evening.
