Counselling centre urges time and space for victims as Kamloops RCMP launch sexual assault investigation
KAMLOOPS – Tuesday afternoon (Aug. 20th), Kamloops RCMP announced the launch of an investigation into third-party reports around the sexual assault of vulnerable women by one perpetrator. The Kamloops Sexual Assault Counselling Centre (KSACC) says while coming forward is important, it isn’t always easy. Victims need time and space.
“I don’t think that the whole onus should be on survivors to create safety in our community. Our goal is to meet people where they’re at. If they’re looking to do that, we’re happy to support them. If they’re not really sure if they want to do that, that’s something that we can chat with them about. They can change their mind at any time,” said Hayley Hughes, a counsellor at KSACC.
The Kamloops RCMP have added trauma resources to their sex crimes unit, meant to give survivors more support.
