Sex crime reports involving vulnerable women prompt warning from Kamloops RCMP

KAMLOOPS — RCMP are issuing a warning to Kamloops residents in the wake of a pair of disturbing sexual assault reports.

Police say the reports were both made by third parties between early July and August of this year. In each case, the reports suggested women leading what RCMP call ‘vulnerable lifestyles’ may have been specifically targeted.

“In both these instances, women who tend to lead more vulnerable lifestyle appear to have been the intended targets of these attacks,” said Cpl. Joe Bayda, head of the Kamloops RCMP General Investigation Support Team.

Detachment spokesperson Cpl. Dana Napier notes the local detachment has upped resources to the Sex Crimes Unit. She says the team uses a trauma-informed approach to investigating sexual offences.

In warning the public, Napier asks other potential victims to speak out.

“In both cases, police are actively working to gather further evidence to advance the investigations and identify the person responsible,” said Napier. “As the investigation progresses, police are concerned that other individuals may have had negative experiences with the perpetrator, or may have been victimized, but have not yet come forward.”

“We are committed to ensuring their safety and encouraging others who may have been affected to come forward,” added Bayda.

Those who may have experienced sexual violence or knows someone who could use some support is asked to contact the Kamloops Sexual Assault Counselling Centre (KSACC) 24-hour crisis line at 1 (888) 974-7278. In relation to these investigations, RCMP ask anyone who may have further information to call the detachment’s non-emergency line at (250) 828-3000.
